Samsung Wallet is expanding its Digital Key feature to support select Porsche models, allowing owners to unlock, lock and start their vehicles using compatible Galaxy phones. The integration will debut in Europe in December for the all-electric Porsche Macan and upcoming Cayenne Electric, with a broader global rollout aligned to Porsche’s launch schedule. Other new Porsche models will also gain support over time as part of this partnership.
How Porsche Digital Keys Work with Galaxy Phones
The system uses secure Ultra-Wideband (UWB) or NFC connectivity between the car and phone to perform key functions without a physical fob. With an eligible Galaxy device, drivers can approach the vehicle, tap or simply get within range (for UWB) to unlock doors, then start the engine from inside using the phone as authentication. If a phone is lost or stolen, owners can remotely revoke or delete the stored Digital Key to protect access.
Samsung Wallet handles encryption and secure element storage on-device, similar to existing implementations on Google Pixel and Apple iPhone platforms. Keys can be managed directly in the Wallet app, giving users centralized control alongside payments, passes and IDs.
Supported Phones and Regions
| Category | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial Porsche Models | Macan Electric, Cayenne Electric (new gen) |
| Connectivity | UWB and NFC, depending on vehicle/phone |
| Rollout | Europe first, then global with vehicle launches |
| Minimum Galaxy Phones | Galaxy S20, Note 20, Z Fold 2, Z Flip 5G and newer |
Most recent Galaxy flagships come with Samsung Wallet preinstalled, and many midrange models support it as a download. Porsche’s integration aligns with industry standards used by other automakers, making cross-ecosystem adoption more seamless for users carrying multiple devices.
Part of a Broader Samsung Wallet Strategy
Digital Key is one pillar in Samsung’s vision of the phone as a universal access device. Initially launched in 2021, the feature already works with select Volvo and Polestar EVs, where drivers can unlock and start their cars using Galaxy devices. Expanding to Porsche reinforces Samsung’s presence in the premium automotive segment and showcases how Wallet can handle more than just payments.
Alongside car keys, Samsung Wallet stores credit and debit cards, transit passes, airline boarding passes and loyalty cards. A recently added tap-to-transfer feature lets users move money between accounts or peers by physically tapping phones, further consolidating daily utilities into a single app.
Using Samsung Digital Key with a Porsche
- Confirm your Porsche model supports Samsung Digital Key via dealer or owner portal.
- On a compatible Galaxy phone, open Samsung Wallet and sign in with your Samsung account.
- Select “Add Digital Key” and choose Porsche from the car brands list.
- Follow on-screen pairing steps in the vehicle (often via infotainment or QR code).
- Set unlock behavior (tap-to-unlock via NFC or proximity via UWB where available).
- Test lock/unlock and engine start with the phone before stowing your physical key.
- Use Wallet settings to revoke access if the phone is lost, sold or reset.
The Porsche-Samsung tie-up reflects a broader move toward phones as primary identity and access devices, especially in high-end EVs. For drivers, it means fewer items to carry; for Samsung, it cements Wallet’s role at the center of digital life — from paying at a terminal to driving off in a luxury SUV, all with the same device.
