Meta makes Facebook Reels more like their Instagram counterparts

Meta is revamping Facebook Reels with a set of major updates designed to bring the experience closer to that of Instagram Reels. One of the biggest changes is the introduction of friend bubbles — small profile icons that appear alongside Reels to show which posts your friends have liked. Meta says this makes it easier to jump into conversations about shared interests right from the video feed. Instagram already has a similar feature, including the ability to share Reels via direct messages, and Facebook is now catching up.

The company is also rolling out a refreshed recommendations engine that it claims “learns your interests faster and serves you newer, more relevant Reels.” According to Meta, the upgraded engine will display 50% more freshly published content — a move aimed at keeping the feed feeling timely and dynamic.

Another key update involves personalization. The new algorithm now takes into account your preferred video length — if you frequently watch longer Reels, you’ll see more of them, and vice versa. A new “Not Interested” button has also been added, giving users more direct control over the type of content they see.

And because it’s 2025, of course there’s AI involved. Meta says Facebook Reels will now feature AI-powered deep-dive suggestions, helping users explore specific interests or topics in more depth. Whether it’s bingeing cooking tutorials, fitness routines, or—yes—a long string of Sopranos clips, the new system is built to keep you scrolling through exactly what you love.
