A Sora 2 launch on Android looks to be imminent – it just showed up on the Google Play Store

Sora 2, the viral AI video app that blends video generation with a TikTok-style social platform, has quietly appeared on the Google Play Store. However, it’s not yet available for download — you can currently only preregister if you’re located in the US or Canada.

Originally launched on iPhone just a couple of weeks ago, Sora 2 has already become an overnight sensation. The app remains invite-only on iOS, and it appears that the same restricted access will apply when it eventually lands on Android. That said, the Android debut may coincide with a broader public rollout, potentially lifting the invite-only barrier altogether.

The listing was first spotted by tech insider @ArtemR (via Android Police), suggesting that the Android version’s release is imminent. OpenAI, which also developed ChatGPT, is likely pacing the rollout carefully to manage server load and usage costs. CEO Sam Altman recently acknowledged that users are generating far more videos than anticipated, each carrying a significant computational expense.

Despite the limited access, Sora 2’s output is already dominating social media feeds, with users sharing AI-generated clips that range from stunningly realistic to wildly surreal. Early impressions, including our own testing, show that the technology is both impressive and unsettling — raising fresh questions about authenticity, creativity, and the ethical use of AI in video content.

Beyond its viral success, Sora 2 has reignited debate over deepfake technology and the legal gray areas it inhabits. The ability to generate convincing videos featuring real people, whether celebrities or private individuals, continues to challenge existing norms around privacy and media integrity.

For now, those lucky enough to secure an invite can use the app for free, within what OpenAI calls “generous” creation limits. That’s been more than enough to propel Sora 2 to the top of the iOS App Store charts — and judging by the hype, Android users could soon help it achieve the same feat on Google Play.
