Apple is reportedly evaluating the addition of a second rear camera to the upcoming 2026 iPhone Air, according to a new leak circulating on Chinese social media.
From its earliest rumors, the iPhone 17 Air — Apple’s anticipated lightweight flagship — was expected to include just a single camera. Now, a fresh leak suggests that its successor, possibly called the iPhone 18 Air, could receive a notable hardware upgrade.
The claim comes from reliable tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo. The post notes that engineering evaluation for the 2026 iPhone Air is underway, describing the process as routine for this development stage. Early details point to the introduction of an additional camera as the model’s main change.
“The 6.5-inch high-refresh medium display and horizontal runway design remain unchanged,” the leaker wrote (translated from Chinese). “Apple is testing a configuration with a 48MP main lens plus a 48MP ultra-wide lens, depending on the telephoto module’s performance.”
The potential second camera would reportedly be housed within the device’s existing horizontal camera bar — the distinctive “plateau” design. This structure allows Apple to maintain a slim body by concentrating key components, such as the camera system and internal modules, within the raised section. The rest of the chassis can then accommodate a larger battery.
Adding a second lens to the iPhone Air’s plateau could require significant internal adjustments. However, Apple might already be working toward such refinements, given that the rumored iPhone Fold is said to feature a thin body with dual cameras as well.
Digital Chat Station has a strong track record for early Apple-related leaks, though the leaker’s prolific posting means not all predictions pan out. Still, if accurate, this development suggests Apple may be bringing more photography power to its thinner, more affordable Air lineup — further blurring the line between portability and performance.
