MacPaw’s new Moonlock app challenges the myth of virus-proof Macs

MacPaw, the Ukrainian developer behind CleanMyMac and Setapp, has introduced Moonlock, a dedicated cybersecurity app for macOS designed to make digital protection effortless for everyday users.

Simplifying macOS security

Unveiled on October 28, Moonlock targets users who find traditional cybersecurity tools overly complex. Its goal is simple: offer strong, transparent protection without overwhelming people with jargon or endless settings.

Moonlock provides real-time protection that quietly scans for and neutralizes threats, even when the app isn’t open. For more detailed maintenance, the built-in Malware Scanner supports on-demand and scheduled system scans.

A VPN adds another layer of safety for browsing on public Wi-Fi, while the Network Inspector lets users block online connections from specific countries.

The app’s clean purple interface prominently showcases its core features—Malware Scanner, VPN, Network Inspector, System Protection, and Security Advisor—with friendly visuals and a guided welcome flow.

Built around user understanding

Moonlock includes a System Protection tool that walks users through macOS’s native defenses, and a Security Advisor that offers practical, easy-to-follow tips for safer online habits.

Every feature comes with clear, contextual explanations, giving users greater confidence and control over their security settings.

A human-first design philosophy

MacPaw sees Moonlock as a key part of its broader Software 3.0 strategy, which focuses on rethinking how humans interact with digital tools. The company’s vision is to make cybersecurity approachable—helping users feel empowered rather than intimidated.

Rising need for Mac protection

According to the 2025 Moonlock Survey, 66% of Mac users faced at least one cyber threat in 2024, with malware detections up 20% from the previous year. While these figures come from MacPaw’s own research, they mirror wider trends showing that macOS users are increasingly being targeted.

Price and availability

Moonlock is available now for macOS. Users can start with a 7-day free trial or opt for an annual subscription at $54. It is also included in MacPaw’s Setapp service, giving current subscribers access at no additional cost.

Its pricing sits in line with competitors such as Bitdefender, Intego, and Norton. However, while those products often emphasize multi-platform or enterprise protection, Moonlock focuses solely on delivering a seamless, Mac-native experience.

For many, that simplicity—and MacPaw’s reputation for user-friendly design—may be what determines whether Moonlock truly earns a place as the default security companion for macOS users.
