Apple has officially launched Emergency SOS via satellite in Mexico starting today, available on iPhone 14 models and newer, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 3.
Previously, only Find My via satellite and Messages via satellite were accessible in Mexico. The new Emergency SOS service enables users to send text messages directly to emergency responders even when no Wi-Fi or cellular connection is available—provided the device has a clear view of the sky. This critical safety feature operates through the satellite network powered by Globalstar.
In Mexico, the feature requires an iPhone 14 or later running iOS 18.4 or above, or an Apple Watch Ultra 3 with watchOS 26.0.1 or higher. To activate Emergency SOS on an iPhone, users can start a message to 911 in the Messages app and select Emergency Services. Alternatively, they can access Control Center, swipe to the cellular symbol page, tap “Satellite,” and launch Apple’s Connection Assistant, then select Emergency SOS via satellite.
Apple has not yet introduced any charges for its satellite services. In fact, in September, Apple extended an additional year of complimentary access to its full suite of satellite features for existing iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users.
Beyond Mexico, Emergency SOS via satellite is also available in countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Required iOS versions for these features vary by country.
International travelers can utilize Emergency SOS via satellite when visiting supported countries, except users with iPhones purchased in Armenia, Belarus, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, or Russia, as per Apple’s policy.
This expansion enhances safety and connectivity options, providing critical emergency communication capabilities for users even in remote or coverage-lacking areas.
