Apple discontinuing support for older Home architecture in February 2026

Apple has officially extended support for its original Apple Home architecture until February 10, 2026, giving users additional time to transition to the newer version before the older system is fully discontinued.

Originally, Apple had planned to phase out the legacy architecture by Fall 2025, following its announcement in May 2025. The move wasn’t surprising—early references to the change appeared in iOS 18.4 developer beta updates, which urged users to upgrade to the latest Home architecture.

Now, Apple’s website confirms the revised date, noting that “support for the previous version of Apple Home will end on February 10, 2026.” The company is encouraging users to upgrade early “to avoid interruptions” and take advantage of new system features.

New Features and Requirements

The updated Apple Home architecture introduces several enhancements, including guest access, support for robot vacuum cleaners, and Activity History. To use the new platform, users must have at

least one device running the following software versions or later:

  • iOS 16.2 on iPhone
  • iPadOS 16.2 on iPad
  • macOS Ventura 13.1 on Mac
  • tvOS 16.2 on Apple TV
  • watchOS 9.2 on Apple Watch

Devices running earlier software will lose access to upgraded homes until they are updated.

Apple first introduced this improved architecture in iOS 16.2 (November 2022), promising faster performance and greater reliability for HomeKit accessories. However, early issues led to its temporary withdrawal in December 2022 before being relaunched successfully with iOS 16.4 in February 2023.

Transition Deadline and Upgrade Process

While upgrading has remained optional until now, support for the old system—previously known as HomeKit—will officially end on February 10, 2026. Apple recommends users make the switch soon to ensure seamless smart home functionality.

How to upgrade:

  • Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  • Tap or click the More button.
  • Select Home Settings. If multiple homes exist, choose one first.
  • Open Software Update.
  • Tap or click Update Now, then follow the prompts.

The upgrade applies to all registered homes simultaneously, so users need to complete the process only once.
